After the rape, when I was fourteen, my pain was excruciating. But it went beyond the physical wounds which heal with time even though they may leave scars. Carl had ripped out my soul, and nothing inside me had ever fully healed.

The pain Charles inflicted on me the night before had been draining and exhilarating all at the same time. Releasing so much anger had left me limp. I’d not understood the impact of holding in my emotions for so long. Every moment I’d carried that anger inside me, it had suffocated me more and more, preventing me from moving forward. Until Hendrix. And now, Charles.

I crawled out of bed slowly and headed for another hot shower. For the first time since the tornado, I’d slept through the entire night. I was sore, but a new energy buzzed inside me.

And this afternoon, Hendrix and I would visit the campus.

An hour later, I descended the stairs dressed in the cutest skinny jeans I owned and an emerald green shirt. Even though I’d be with Hendrix, I left my hair down. If there were ever an altercation, I’d rather lose a chunk of hair than allow someone to control me with a ponytail.

It was a little bit after nine, and I was starving. I wandered into the kitchen to find Ada Lynn and Ruby discussing recipes. I smiled and made my way to Ada Lynn, joining her at the bar. Leaning my head on her shoulder, I peered up at her. “Morning.”

“Good morning. How are you?”

“Fine, but I need a full pot of coffee and a big breakfast.”

“You have an appetite this morning?” Ruby asked, grinning widely. She hurried toward the fridge, her hips swishing with every step, and began whipping together who knew what for a meal. At this point, I didn’t care as long it was edible.

“How’s your room. Are you comfortable? Do you have everything you need?” I asked Ada Lynn quietly.

“It’s wonderful. The bed is so comfortable, I literally sink into it.” She flashed a smile. “It’s been fun to see Spokane and stay in such a nice home,” she whispered.

“Right?” My eyes widened in agreement, and I nodded.

Ruby brought us each a large cup of freshly brewed coffee, creamer, milk, and sugar.

“Aww, that’s super sweet. Thank you, Ruby,” I said, inhaling the strong aroma of my favorite beverage in the entire world. I'd hated the taste of coffee until Mac introduced me to the good stuff. And it was a necessary evil during all the late nights of studying.

“I’m a little lost not cooking and taking care of my own laundry,” Ada Lynn admitted.

I took her hand.

“You deserve to be pampered. We can find some other things for you to do if you’re bored.”

“Franklin has already set up some doctor’s appointments for me. Charles will drive, and I don’t have to stress over getting lost in a big city. It’s nice to have help while getting situated in a new state.”

“Yeah. I know. I felt so lost when I arrived on campus, but Mac jumped in and helped.
